SH45 Devon Street West cycle improvements to start

|

The NZ Transport Agency starts work on the cycle improvements in the urban area of State Highway 45, between Bayly Road and Belt Road on Monday 21 May 2018.

The improvements are expected to make everyday trips by bike safer and easier by providing a wider shoulder, bus parking and new off road car parking areas.

The Transport Agency’s System Manager, Ross I’Anson, says the cycle improvements, on State Highway 45, will be a significant improvement for local riders.

“We hope it will encourage more people to consider cycling as a transport option.

“Please be aware that while the work is underway there will be some disruption for the duration of the project. Unfortunately this is unavoidable whenever these types of works are undertaken on the State Highway, however the team will be doing as much as they can to minimise impact to road users.

“We’d like to apologise in advance for this disruption and thank you for your patience,” Mr I’Anson says.

The New Plymouth District Council carried out engagement with the community on the State Highway 45 Devon Street West improvements.

The Council’s Chief Operating Officer, Kelvin Wright, says a number of options were considered before the project was finalised.

“The option we are delivering following consultation is one that we believe will deliver a safer cycling facility while still providing amenity for residents on street car parking and the urban bus service”

This project follows a similar programme of road safety improvements on South Road between Belair Avenue and Manadon Street in 2015.

Works are expected to be completed in early July, weather permitting. This work is weather dependent, so changes to the start date and continuation of the work may occur.
