The public will once more be able to walk and cycle along Anzac Parade riverbank on State Highway 4 in Whanganui after the NZ Transport Agency completed repair work this week.

A karakia to mark the end of repair works was held on Tuesday 8 October before the footpath and cyclepath was reopened to the public.
The Transport Agency has been working since 2015 to repair considerable damage caused to the road and cycleway by severe flooding, which had undermined the riverbank.
Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says the relation of the project to the Whanganui River and state highway network, and the close proximity of residential and business properties has made for a challenging process.
“Working between an unpredictable environment like a river and the edge of a state highway while trying to minimise impact to local residents and businesses isn’t easy, but I’m incredibly impressed by the quality of the work,” Mr Owen says.
“This is a significant project in the maintenance world and the team has done a great job to get this project completed.”
Some minor works to the State Highway 4 carriageway are continuing, and expected to be completed by next week.
