The Transport Agency is advising that work to upgrade Te Kowhai Road and Limmer Road to connect SH39 traffic with the Te Rapa section of the Waikato Expressway is nearly complete, with a new intersection layout at Limmer Road and Horotiu Road which re-prioritises state highway traffic.
The key change is that SH39, from Limmer Rd north to Ngaruawahia, reverts to a local road, and traffic heading south on that stretch will need to give way at the new intersection at Limmer Road.
SH39 will be re-routed along Limmer Road and Te Kowhai Road which provides a more direct link to SH1 since the opening of the Te Rapa and Ngaruawahia sections of the Expressway. The new layout will improve safety and save time for drivers on the western route to use this new SH39 link.
The northern part of SH39 – from Limmer Road to Ngaruawahia – has a poor safety record and this change will reduce traffic on that stretch, which includes Te Kowhai village.
The Transport Agency appreciates the patience of residents and motorists while this work is being undertaken.
The 4.8km project involved the new intersection, road widening, curve easing and other safety improvements like moving power poles.
The site is under temporary traffic management and drivers are requested to take extra care until the final layout is bedded in. Sealing and road marking will be completed later in the month, depending on the weather.
