Work is expected to begin tomorrow afternoon to clear a major rockfall from SH36/Pyes Pa Road in the Mangorewa/Kaharoa Gorge, between Tauranga and Rotorua.
The rockfall occurred shortly after 8am today. Two vehicles were struck by debris. The NZTA has begun an investigation into the incident.
The Department of Labour has now completed a walk-over of the site and given the go-ahead for contractors to begin stabilising the site today before clearing of the debris can begin tomorrow. This may include some blasting work to clear loose material and ensure that the site is safe.
The road has been closed to traffic between 9am – 4pm every weekday since June 12 while work has been carried out to increase the width of the road.
The earliest the road is expected to re-open to traffic is 4pm on Monday 17 August. This will be re-assessed as work progresses over the weekend.
