Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising that State Highway 35 at Turihaua Point remains down to one lane, due to coastal erosion caused by large swells and high tides over recent days.
Crews have been onsite working to fill the erosion and get the road reopened to two lanes, however access difficulties have made the work challenging.
“We were hoping to have the road back up to two lanes by tomorrow, but due to the difficulties our crews are having in transporting fill to the erosion site, we expect that the road won’t be fully open until Friday evening,” Senior Network and Journey Manager Helen Harris says.
“In the meantime, the road will remain down to one lane with traffic lights and a speed restriction in place. We ask motorists to please take extra care when travelling through the area and to be mindful of our crews who are working hard to get the erosion filled.”
Waka Kotahi also advises motorists that there may be times when all vehicles will need to be stopped to allow trucks onsite, and to plan ahead.
“We thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we work to get the road reopened safely and quickly,” Ms Harris says.
