The NZ Transport Agency is advising road users that SH35 will be out of action on Tuesday September 11 between Te Puia Springs and Tokomaru Bay to enable crews to carry out bridge repairs.
NZTA acting state highways manager Gordon Hart says road crews will carry out work between 10am and 1pm to repair the bailey bridge located at the Mangahauini Bridge site after damage was detected in a recent inspection.
“The damage is not serious but we need to repair it to prevent it from getting worse and potentially causing disruption.”
“We’ve asked our crews to swoop in between 10am and 1pm - that way we get in and out without upsetting the school bus run.”
‘’We appreciate that it’s always a headache when the highway is out of action, and we thank people for their patience while we get this work done as quickly as we can.”
No alternative routes are available and motorists are asked to plan their travel around the work times. The NZTA thanks the public for their patience and understanding while this important work is done.
Mr Hart says the NZTA expects to award a contract this summer to repair the underlying bridge so that the bailey bridge, which is under a temporary speed restriction, can be removed and traffic can return to the usual bridge.
