The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) advises that a diversion is now in place to allow light vehicles to travel around the slip site at Maraenui Hill, and back onto State Highway 35.
NZTA Acting Bay of Plenty State Highway Manager Kevin Reid says the contractor has been working all day to clear the two kilometre length of unsealed forestry road which is being used to provide access around the slip site.
“Motorists planning to use this detour route will need to take extreme care because it is very steep and windy. A 30km/h speed restriction is in place and the route can only carry one lane of traffic so its being managed by stop/go traffic control at all times,” Mr Reid said.
The detour will add an additional 10 – 15 minutes travel time, and is only available for light vehicles.
Updates about the closure will be aired on Whakatane radio station IXX and posted on the highway information section of NZTA web site: www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/current-conditions/highway-info/(external link)
