Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises multiple worksites are active on State Highway 30/ Te Ngae Road, between Sala Street and Iles Road, in Rotorua this week, as part of the Eastern Corridor Stage One project.
Delays are expected at times and motorists are advised to plan for these delays and allow extra time for their journeys.
Revised date for new signalised intersection at State Highway 30/Tarawera Road intersection
The new signalised intersection at the State Highway 30/Tarawera Road intersection in Rotorua is now scheduled to be operational from 6am on Friday 23 July. The new date is to accommodate the inclement weather forecast and remains weather dependent.
The upgrade means that one of Rotorua’s busiest intersections will be safer and easier to use. The temporary roundabout will be removed overnight, with the lights expected to be operational from 6am on Friday 23 July. Work has been scheduled to take place overnight where possible to reduce impact on traffic. From Thursday 22 July 7pm to Friday 23 July 6am, the intersections with SH30 at Marino and Tarawera roads will be closed with detours in place.
The temporary signalised intersection is being introduced during the school holidays, when traffic flows are more consistent throughout the day. However, motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, especially during morning and evening peak times. Some delays are anticipated as people adjust to the new layout and the traffic lights. The intersection performance will be monitored and adjustments made to the traffic light phasing, as required.
When the traffic lights are operational, the community is being advised to expect the intersection to be an active worksite for the next few weeks as final works are completed.
Work sites for the week starting Sunday 18 July:

The intersections with SH30 at Marino and Tarawera Roads will be closed intermittently during these hours with detours in place. Westbound lane closures will be in place between 10am and 2pm on Monday 19 July to allow contractors to install overhead traffic lights which may cause significant delays.

- State Highway 30, Allen Mills Road to Iles Road – Pedestrian access through this section is for business access and residents only as there is no through access to Rotorua CBD. See below map for pedestrian access routes.
Temporary speed limits of 30km/h or 50km/h are in place at the above work sites, including when workers are off-site.
Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use the signalised crossings at either Sala Street or Iles Road, and the temporary pedestrian crossing at Tarawera Road.
In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, work may be postponed.
