State Highway 3 is closed between Mountain Road and De Havilland Drive at Bell Block in New Plymouth, due to a fatal Police shooting overnight.
Update @ 4.15pm
State Highway 3 will remain closed overnight between Mountain Road and De Havilland Drive in Bell Block, New Plymouth. A further update will be provided tomorrow. With there likely to be more traffic on the road tomorrow as people head home from their long weekend holiday breaks, Waka Kotahi asks anyone traveling through New Plymouth to be patient and allow extra time for their journeys.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says the road is expected to remain closed for some time.
People are advised to avoid the area if possible or make use of the following detour route.
Northbound traffic should turn left onto De Havilland Drive, then left onto Corbett Road, left onto Manutahi Road, then another left onto State Highway 3A, before turning right back onto SH3. Southbound traffic should use the same route, in reverse.
