The NZ Transport Agency advises drivers that traffic movements at the intersection of SH20A and Kirkbride Road will be restricted from Monday 10 August until March next year.
To allow for construction of the new motorway interchange, drivers will be unable to turn right from Kirkbride Road onto the state highway. There will also be no left turn onto Kirkbride Road for drivers travelling north from the airport.
An additional right turn lane from SH20A onto Montgomerie Road has been temporarily installed to improve access into the Airport Oaks area during construction works at Kirkbride Road.
“Drivers accessing Ihumatao and Airport Oaks can avoid delays by using Montgomerie Road instead of Kirkbride during construction works,” says the NZ Transport Agency’s Highways Manager, Brett Gliddon.
“Restricting turning movements at the Kirkbride Road intersection allows us room for the construction work and will mean traffic lights can provide more ‘green time’ to improve flows for traffic heading to and from the airport.”
The existing state highway lanes to and from the airport will be maintained throughout construction, although the road layout at the intersection will shift to allow space for construction works on the western side of the corridor.
Those travelling on SH20A to and from the airport are advised to allow additional time for their journey, particularly if accessing parking or accommodation providers in the Airport Oaks area.
Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to avoid travelling on the state highway. A temporary diversion route is signposted between Kirkbride Road and the Landing Drive roundabout until the new shared path on SH20A opens in May 2016.
Current travel times on SH20A are available on a mobile friendly app by visiting www.drivelive.nz/akl(external link). We recommend drivers check travel times prior to setting off on their journey.

SH20A to Airport project:
The SH20A to Airport project is one of four transport programmes being accelerated by the Government to help manage the projected growth in population, employment, and freight in Auckland.
The main features include the construction of a 580 metre long trench that will carry SH20A – one of the main routes to and from Auckland Airport – under Kirkbride Road, new facilities on local roads for walkers and cyclists, a fully segregated shared path alongside SH20A and the provision for future bus shoulders on the state highway.
