SH2 Wharerātā resurfacing work extended

|

Up to 4 nights of additional overnight road closures are required for asphalting works on State Highway 2 at Wharerātā early next week, after this work had to be deferred due to wet weather and equipment failure.

The work has been underway since late last month and had been scheduled to be completed today, however crews will now need to finish next week. This work is important resurfacing work to improve the condition and resilience of the network post-Cyclone Gabrielle.

The stretch of road between Nicks Head Station Road and Maraenui Road will close between 8pm and 5am each night, from next Tuesday (13 February) to Friday. The work will be complete and the road reopened at 5am on Saturday.

NZ Transport Agency System Manager for Hawke’s Bay / Tairāwhiti Martin Colditz says the machinery breakdown is unfortunate timing and we’re working with our contractor to ensure next week’s work is completed on time.

To minimise disruption during next week’s work, two nightly convoys will be in place to safely guide vehicles through the worksite in both directions.

Road users will be asked to be at the closure points at Maraenui Road by 10.30pm and 1.30am, for northbound travel, and Nicks Head Station Road by 10.45pm and 1.45am for southbound travel, and wait for the pilot vehicle to guide them through.

This overnight work remains weather dependent and NZTA advises all road users to regularly check our interactive Journey Planner for up to date, daily information. If the wet weather delays work at any stage, the road will be open that night.

Once next week’s work is complete, crews will move to Otoko for further resurfacing.(external link)

Details of further resurfacing in Gisborne, including SH2 Kopua later this month, will follow once schedules are confirmed.
