The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that State Highway 2 (SH2) between Taneatua and Wainui Road is CLOSED due to a serious crash near Fraser Road.
Emergency services are at the scene and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
The road is expected to remain closed for a number of hours.
Traffic is being diverted via Whakatane to Opotiki, however other SH2 closures are in place in the Gisborne region due to flooding near Matawai.
