State Highway 2 has reopened to one lane between Napier and Wairoa, after closing due to a slip earlier today.
However, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is asking people to avoid unnecessary travel on the stretch of SH2 between Gisborne and Napier overnight, and advising that State Highway 38 is likely to remain closed until tomorrow.
Regional Manager Jaclyn Hankin says contractors have been working hard across the network.
“Our contractors are needing to respond to issues right across the Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne state highway network, and they may be limited in their ability to respond quickly to any new issues that may arise on the network.
“The ground is saturated from the significant rainfall we have experienced over the past week, and this route is at particular risk of slips.
“Avoid unnecessary journeys. Those who need to travel are asked to take extra care and be extra vigilant for unreported hazards.
“Slow down and maintain a greater following distance between your vehicle and the one in front.
“We want to see everyone get home safely. Stay safe and stay alert.”
