Southbound lanes on State Highway 1 at Ellerslie will be closed tonight for emergency work after a large trailer unit hit the Penrose Road bridge earlier today.
The NZ Transport Agency says the southbound lanes will be closed at midnight until 6am Saturday morning, from the Ellerslie Panmure southbound off-ramp to the Mt Wellington southbound on-ramp.
Motorists are advised to use the alternative route of Great South Road.
Traffic remains heavy on the Southern Motorway for both north and southbound traffic and motorists are advised to allow plenty of time for their journey.
