State Highway 1 north of Christchurch has re-opened this morning to all traffic.
The highway was closed yesterday after flooding at Saltwater Creek and the Kowai River made it impassable to all vehicles, expect four-wheel drives and freight trucks.
The NZ Transport Agency’s Performance Manager Pete Connors says flood waters had receded overnight making it safe for cars to now travel on SH1 from Waikuku to Amberley.
He urged extreme caution when driving from Christchurch to Picton today with some surface flooding still remaining and conditions hazardous in areas.
“Motorists are advised to lower their speed and increase their following distances to reduce any risk of a crash.”
