SH1 Raumati Straight merge lane moves south

|

The NZ Transport Agency is advising that the temporary southbound merge lane on State Highway 1 Raumati Straight is being moved one kilometre further south to Mackays Crossing next week.

The temporary merge from two lanes to one was installed as a temporary measure late last year, starting halfway along the Raumati Straight, during Mackays Crossing maintenance works underway in the vicinity.

The works have now moved further away, providing the opportunity to open up a longer length of two lanes. The new merge, which will start just before the Mackays Crossing southbound off-ramp, is also temporary while the Transmission Gully motorway is being built.

Work is scheduled to start on Sunday night 4 August and the new merge location is expected to be in place by Tuesday morning, weather dependant.

The current speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour will remain.

The Transport Agency would like to remind road users of the rules for safe merging:

  • Adjust your speed and following position.
  • Merge like a zip - at the merge point take turns moving from two lanes to one like the teeth of a zipper coming together.
  • Allow enough space between vehicles to merge smoothly without causing others to brake suddenly.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
