The NZ Transport Agency will close the southbound lanes of the Northern Motorway (SH1) between the Northcote Road off-ramp and Onewa Road on-ramp at 8pm this evening.
“We will briefly reopen the motorway southbound between 5pm and 8pm for the evening peak. After this time the lanes will close to carry out further work on the old Onewa Road bridge. The NZTA assures motorists that the bridge is safe to travel under on their drive home this evening,” says NZTA acting regional manager Tommy Parker.
Motorists are advised to take the Upper Harbour Motorway (SH18) at Constellation Drive and the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to avoid delays.
The bridge was struck by a digger on a truck earlier this morning and crews have been working to clear debris and assess the damage. The bridge was not in use at the time of the strike and is being demolished as part of the Onewa Road Interchange upgrade.
Daytime closures are also planned for this weekend to carry out further work on the bridge.
The new southbound on-ramp at Onewa Road and buses using the busway are unaffected.
