Drivers travelling between Auckland and Northland are advised to use SH16 between Wellsford and Helensville as an alternative route.
The accident happened at about 12.30pm and involved a logging truck and a car.
The NZTA warns motorists that several logs are blocking the highway and it could take some time to clear them.
Drivers going north can access SH16 from the Silverdale Interchange, and from the Northwestern Motorway through Helensville. People travelling south can access SH16 at Wellsford or from Woodcocks Road at Warkworth.
Motorists will be kept informed of traffic conditions and alternative routes with roadside electronic messages and radio traffic updates.
