SH1 in Northland still closed by floods

The NZ Transport Agency advises all drivers that State Highway 1 near Whakapara north of Hikurangi in Northland remains closed by flood waters and is not expected to re-open for several hours.

When flood waters recede, the highway will need to be cleared of debris and a bridge over the upper reaches of the Northern Wairoa River inspected before the NZTA is satisfied the highway is safe.

The NZTA says the detour route that is in place is not suitable for heavy vehicles like logging trucks and milk tankers.    Other vehicles can bypass the flooding along Apotu, Jordan Valley and Hukerenui Roads.

"We will endeavour to have the highway re-opened as quickly as we can," says the NZTA's Regional Assets Manager, Steve Mutton.  "It is likely when we do so that access will be restricted to one lane until we have had the opportunity to properly inspect the flood damage.

"We urge all drivers to continue to take extreme care in the region, drive to the conditions, and allow more time for their journeys so that they can reach their destinations safely."

Mr Mutton say before starting their journeys people should check with the NZTA's freephone 0800 4 HIGHWAYS or 0800 44 44 49, or its website
