The NZ Transport Agency begins drainage improvement work on a section of northbound SH1 lanes at the Tawa Curves next week to address flooding on this part of the highway.
Wellington Regional Director Dr Deborah Hume says the work on a section of SH1 between Westchester Drive and Takapu Road, begins on Monday, 6 April, and will take up to 11 weeks to complete.
"We appreciate this will have some impact to road users, but the contractor will be monitoring traffic conditions to ensure delays are kept to a minimum," Dr Hume says.
This work involves installing two new pipes across the motorway and associated service work to reduce surface flooding on the Tawa curves area. Work will be carried out during the day, but scheduled to minimise the potential impact to road users. The motorway will be fully open during peak times, but will be reduced to one lane in the northbound direction only outside those hours as required. Speed restrictions will be in place to protect the safety of both road users and the people working on the road.
"We anticipate there may be delays during this work and suggest adding some extra time to your travel if you are driving on this part of the highway over the next couple of months."
NZTA asks for road users' patience while this maintenance work is carried out. Weather permitting it should be completed by mid-June.
