State Highway 1 through the Desert Road is likely to remain closed until early this evening, following a fatal crash.
The road remains closed between Waiouru and Rangipo while the Serious Crash Unit carries out an investigation.

A detour is in place.
The detour for northbound traffic: turn left onto SH49, right onto SH4, right onto SH47, right onto SH46 and then left back onto SH1. Reverse for southbound.
NOTE: The detour will add at least 40 minutes to journey times.
