The NZ Transport Agency says SH1, including the Northern Gateway Toll Road, has re-opened after a fatal accident just north of Puhoi.
One person died after a collision between a logging truck and a car.
The truck rolled spilling its load of logs across both lanes of the highway.
The accident closed the highway for about four hours.
The NZTA thanks drivers for the patience while the road was closed. Although SH1 has re-opened, the Transport Agency advises people to drive with care while passing the scene of the accident.
