Motorists in Auckland are being urged to prepare for potential disruption to the state highway network, with a strong wind warning in place for Auckland from tomorrow, Friday 20 May.
Metservice has issued a wind warning for Auckland, with average wind speeds of 80km/h or higher between 10am and 4pm, and the possibility of gusts up to 95 km/h between 4pm – 7pm.
The severe winds could result in lane closures on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, potentially disrupting travel in and around the city.
Waka Kotahi is working closely with Metservice to monitor wind speeds and will have road crews ready to manage lane closures if necessary.
With high winds likely to affect the region throughout the day, drivers of high sided vehicles and motorcyclists are also encouraged to avoid the bridge altogether and use the Western Ring on State Highways 16 and 18.
To keep as many lanes open as possible, the moveable lane barrier will kept in the four/four configuration for the day.
Winds are expected to ease overnight on Friday, but may gust up to 80km/h between 7pm on Friday and early Saturday morning.
