The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists that State Highway 58 is closed from Spinnaker Drive to Joseph Banks Drive, Whitby due to flooding.
The combination of high tides and storm conditions have made road conditions unsafe. It is not known how long the road will be closed for, but the road is expected to re-open once the tide recedes. A further high tide is expected around midnight tonight, and may result in the road being closed again.
A detour route through Whitby is available. Westbound traffic can use Joseph Banks Drive, to James Cook Drive, on to Discovery Drive and then on to Postgate Drive. Grays Road in Plimmerton is also currently closed, with a detour route in place. Motorists should follow the detour signs onto State Highway 58 then on to State Highway 1. Maps and details are available at www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/roadhazards/144686
