The NZ Transport Agency has started seawall repairs at two locations on State Highway 12 at Opononi which will help prevent further seawall erosion and provide better pedestrian access.
It’s advising motorists there could be some delays in the area south of the Opononi Beach Holiday Park while the work is being carried out.
The seawall crumbled during bad weather in July and the NZ Transport Agency is creating new rock walls which will provide better protection from further erosion, and ensuring better resilience in future bad weather.
The footpath which has been closed since the slip is also being rebuilt.
One lane will be closed through the repair works, with Stop/Go traffic management in place. There will be short times when both lanes will be closed to allow safe access for trucks to deliver rocks to the site.
The work is excepted to be completed the first week of October.
The NZ Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience as we carry out this work to improve safety, resilience and pedestrian access in the area.
