Upcoming resealing and resurfacing work across the Western Bay and Tauranga area over the coming month will mean disruption to road users, however the benefit will be fresh roads for everyone to enjoy.
Surfacing works on State Highway 29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road commence Tuesday 11 April, with work spread out over three weeks to allow flexibility in the programme should weather foil best laid plans. Work will take place between the hours of 8pm and 5am, with most worksites managed via lane shifts or stop/go traffic management.
During this time road users are encouraged to consider alternative routes, as there may be delays due to the roadworks.
The key period of interest for road users will take place between 16-18 April, when one direction of the SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road will be closed with traffic detoured due to narrow road widths creating a scenario where traffic cannot safely pass the worksite. Detours via SH2, Cambridge Road and Moffat Road will be in place.
This work is important ahead of the upcoming winter period, explains Roger Brady, Bay of Plenty System Manager at Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
“The work we do now helps improve the surface road users drive on, but also importantly waterproofs the road structure underneath. This prevents water entering the road, which decreases the likelihood of potholes forming over winter.
“We are also working through the final stages of our chipseal programme, with work taking place on both SH33 and SH36 after Easter. While the work can be disruptive at times there is a long-term benefit for everyone.
“We’ve had a wet summer, which has affected many regions across the country. The recent drier weather has helped us get through a significant volume of work late in the season, and we are now putting the final pieces of the puzzle into place.”
Ahead of the Easter and Anzac long weekends road users are advised to use the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner before setting off for their destination. The Holiday Journeys website is also live in the lead-up to Easter, providing an overview of when key routes will be at their busiest.
