The NZ Transport Agency confirms that repairs to the surface of a key tourism route in Northland - State Highway 11 south of Paihia - will start next Monday (25 November) weather permitting.
The Transport Agency’s Regional Journey Manager, Jacqui Hori-Hoult, says resealing is expected to take 1 to 2 days, and once completed will provide a safe and uniform highway surface for all drivers.
“Our contractors have nursed and managed the highway over the winter, and now that the warmer weather has arrived we can get on with our repairs,” says Ms Hori-Hoult.
“I would like to thank the local community and those drivers who use this section of SH11 regularly for their patience and understanding while we’ve had speed limits in place over the past few months. This is a priority job for us and although we remain at the mercy of the weather, I, as much as our customers, will be pleased when we upgrade the highway surface”.
Ms Hori-Hoult says all drivers are asked to treat the new surface with care, and to slow down both during the repairs and for the following few days.
“High speeds, braking and turning put additional stress on the new surface and can lead to premature damage and failure that needs to be repaired again, creating further disruption and delays.”
The Transport Agency says drivers should be aware of contractors and machinery working along SH11, and to observe temporary speed restrictions on newly resurfaced sections of the highway to avoid loose and flying chips.
