The railway crossing on State Highway 16 at Kaukapakapa will undergo improvements in March to make it safer for pedestrians and vehicles.
NZ Transport Agency Safe Network Programme Director, Tim Crow says the rail crossing will be made safer with the installation of pedestrian mazes, upgraded warning lights and bells, barriers arms and better signage.
Concrete slabs and better drainage will be laid to improve the surface for a smoother drive over the crossing and to reduce the risk of loss of control crashes.
Work upgrading the railway crossing will take place over two weekends in March, so drivers should plan for extra time to complete their journeys on these days.
Over the weekend of 9-10 March, there will be a temporary speed limit in place and stop/go signs will be used to control traffic over the crossing and allow trucks to enter and exit the work site between 6am and 4pm daily.
Over the weekend of 30-31 March, there will be a temporary speed limit in place and a short diversion around the works with temporary traffic lights between 5am and 4pm on Saturday and 5am and 8pm on Sunday. This will allow the concrete slabs and drainage to be put in place. The road over the crossing will still be open to traffic.
Over both weekends there will some noise and dust around the work site, and large machinery and trucks will be in use, so please be careful when driving through the work site.
Mr Crow says the NZ Transport Agency will endeavour to carry out this work as quickly and as efficiently as possible to minimise disruption.
The level crossing upgrade is part of the Safe Network Programme which is a collaborative initiative that aims to save up to 160 deaths and serious injuries every year across New Zealand’s highest risk routes.
