Travellers on State Highway 3 just south of Hamilton – especially those heading to the airport – are being advised to factor in extra travel time while major safety improvements are underway from 2 March 2015.
Improvements to the intersection of SH3 and Raynes Road, between Hamilton and Rukuhia, will include building a north-bound right-hand turning bay and realignment of the curve.
The NZ Transport Agency says traffic will be managed through the site which at times will be down to one lane.
It recommends people travelling to and from the airport use SH21 via Narrows Bridge/Tamahere or allow 5 minutes extra time.
The work will take place from 7am-6pm, Monday to Saturday, with an estimated completion date of 24 April 2015.
Principal Safety Engineer Michelle Te Wharau says the site will include various types of traffic management depending on the stage of the build, ranging from stop/go with one lane in operation to two-lane flows, with speed restrictions in place.
The Transport Agency thanks motorists and nearby residents in advance for their patience. “The end result will be a much safer intersection for all road users,’’ Mrs Te Wharau said.
