Ruby Bay Bypass is a step closer to becoming a reality with the contract to build the new state highway having been awarded.

Wellington Regional Manager Graham Taylor says that with the $21.8m contract being awarded it is only a matter of weeks before the work begins on the project.

“This will be welcome news to local residents in the Tasman area who are eager to see the new road start to take shape,” Mr Taylor says.

The project, which will build a new 10.7km section of SH60, is scheduled to take two and a-half years to build and has been awarded to Downer EDi Works.

The job requires repositioning the current state highway inland from the coast with a significant portion to be built on former forestry land.  Mr Taylor says this will resulting in a near 9km section of road with limited accesses providing a streamlined journey between Richmond/Nelson and Motueka.

“This is a long-awaited project for the region and has been its number one transportation priority for some time so I’m sure the community will be pleased to hear it won’t be long before work happens on site,” he says.

However, Mr Taylor warned it may be some time before road users actually saw physical progress because work is expected to begin in the “greenfields” forestry area first.
