The NZ Transport Agency advises people travelling along Memorial Avenue towards Russley Road/Christchurch International Airport to expect delays and allow extra travel time this weekend, 6 and 7 May.
Contractors plan to lay asphalt on a 300 metre-long section of Memorial Avenue near Russley Road. Traffic management including lane closures and speed restrictions will be in place between the hours of 3pm and 6am on the afternoon of Saturday, 6 May, into Sunday morning, 7 May.
People heading to the airport during these times are urged to allow extra travel time or use an alternative route to Memorial Avenue. The work is weather dependent and may be postponed until the next suitable period.
The work is part of the State Highway 1 Russley Road Upgrade(external link), a key part of the Christchurch Motorways programme. The project involves upgrading Russley Road (SH1) to a four-lane highway, and the construction of a major interchange at the Russley Road/Memorial Avenue airport intersection that includes a gateway arch designed to welcome travellers to Christchurch.
