The NZ Transport Agency is advising the public that it will be undertaking nighttime roadworks along State Highway 1 Mana Esplanade next week.
Transport Agency regional performance manager Mark Owen says the work will provide a new, durable surface for the Esplanade, which is one of the busiest urban roads in Wellington.
The work will be happening between James Street and Grays Road (by St Theresa’s church) and between Acheron Road and Pascoe Avenue, between the hours of 7pm and 5am, from Sunday to Thursday (weather permitting). Only the southbound lanes will be affected.
“We have 32,000 vehicles a day using the Esplanade, and over time, that takes its toll on the road surface. Once we have upgraded it, the new road surface will be safer, quieter, and will last for years.”
“We’re doing the work at night because then the number of travellers that get affected goes down from several thousand daily to a few hundred. This will save a lot of frustration for people who travel along the Esplanade – we know how busy it is without adding unnecessary delays to the mix. Nighttime work can also be done fairly quickly because there’s less traffic, and it doesn’t disrupt local businesses and activities during the day”
Mr Owen says the Transport Agency have engaged with local residents to help decide the best way to carry out the work.
“We’d like to thank those people who live alongside the highway – we know this work can be a bit noisy, and we would like to thank them for their understanding.”
