Road works signs are starting to come down in Christchurch’s Central City as the whole area within the four avenues becomes an infrastructure rebuild zone.
Work is about to ramp up within the old Central Business District to repair the underground pipes and the roads, and work is also getting underway rebuilding the city’s key community, business and residential projects.
“To help road users move about the Central City with ease, the Christchurch Transport Operations Centre (CTOC), in partnership with SCIRT, is looking at which road works signs can be removed from within the area,” says CTOC Manager Ryan Cooney.
“We’re looking to remove as many road works signs from individual sites as practical within the four avenues, as long as the removal does not compromise the safety of road users or road workers.”
He says the signs will be replaced by perimeter Rebuild Area signs. “These signs are being put up around the four avenues to let road users know they are entering a rebuild zone and to expect road works within the whole area.”
“There is a lot of work to be done in the Central City and the area will be a rebuild zone for some time. What we’re trying to do is limit the disruption to everyone as much as possible. The perimeter signs that signal the whole area is a rebuild zone and tell road users to expect road works.
“The signs are also important in reminding the community that the Central City is still open for business, inviting them into the area to shop while the infrastructure repairs are underway.”
Mr Cooney says the new signs are part of ongoing work by CTOC to look at ways of improving traffic management around road works sites, to help reduce motorist delays and minimise driver frustration.
