The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says from the middle of next month motorists can look forward to a smoother ride along the northbound section of State Highway 1 (SH1) on Crawford Street in Dunedin.
On Monday 31 October 2011, work on resurfacing this section of highway will start with the contractor removing a 40mm layer of the existing asphalt and later in the week start laying the new asphalt. Weather permitting the entire job should be finished by 11 November 2011.
Otago/Southland Highways Operations Manager Roger Bailey says the current pavement has become rough as a result of cracking in old concrete below the road surface.
Businesses and property owners have been contacted about the work. While the highway will be down to one lane at times and parking opportunities may be affected, we do not anticipate any major traffic delays he said.
Roger Bailey said the project costing around $330,000 involves asphalting both of the traffic lanes and the cycle lane along the one kilometre section of SH1 between Gordon St Street and Rattray Street.
Other State Highway work planned around the Dunedin area this year includes similar resurfacing work at the Andy Bay Road /SH1 intersection, some sections of Fairfield Motorway and SH88 through Ravensbourne.
