Work to make the section of St Aubyn Street (SH44) at the Moturoa shops safer will start next week and is expected to take 14 weeks to complete.
Waka Kotahi Transport Systems Manager Ross I Anson says there have been five crashes on St Aubyn Street between Whiteley Street and Rainford Street the last five years and two crashes resulted in people being seriously injured.
“After consulting on a number of options for making the area safer, we are creating a half roundabout at the intersection of St Aubyn Street, Lawry Street and South Road.
“The current pedestrian crossing on St Aubyn Street will also be replaced with a signalised crossing. These improvements will make the area safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and help reduce congestion,” says Mr I’Anson.
To help minimise disruption to traffic the work will be carried out in stages and some of the work will be done at night.
Mr I’Anson thanks the public for their patience and encourages the community to continue to support the local Moturoa businesses while the work is underway.
“Moturoa Village will be open for business as usual during the works. Two lanes of traffic will be retained through the area and footpaths will remain open.
“Carparks will be reduced directly outside the businesses, so we are encouraging people to use the Whiteley Street carpark, which can also be accessed from St Aubyn Street,” says Mr I’Anson.
Lawry Street and South Road will be closed to through traffic from 26 March for approximately six weeks while the roundabout is built, and signposted detours will be in place. However, the Four Square on Lawry Street will be able to be accessed from St Aubyn Street (SH44) via a slip lane.
