Weather delay for road reconstruction.
Update 21 June 2023
Because of ongoing bad weather and the need to have two consecutive fine weekends to complete these works, this project has been deferred until later this year.
While there were weather risks in attempting the work at this time of year, it was considered to be worth the effort, given the urgent need to reconstruct the deteriorating road base in parts of Chapel Street.
The street will not be allowed to deteriorate through the winter and will be continually monitored. Dry periods will be used to remedy surface defects if required in both the Chapel Street areas set down for reconstruction - south of Lincoln Road and further south around Cornwall Street - until better weather allows us to get back into the full project.
We will provide an update when a date for resuming this project is confirmed.
Update 15 June 2023
The road reconstruction works in SH2 Chapel Street, Masterton, scheduled for this weekend (16 June to 19 June. Friday 8 pm to Monday 6 am) have been postponed due to forecast rain.
This means there will be no closure of State Highway 2 Chapel Street between Lincoln Rd and Jackson St.
The planned works are deferred by a week and will begin next weekend (23 June to 26 June. Friday 8 pm to Monday 6 am).
They will resume on the following weekend (30 June to 3 July. Friday 8 pm to Monday 6 am).
Update 8 June 2023
Due to forecast bad weather, the works scheduled for this weekend (Friday 9 June, 8pm to Monday 12 June, 6am) have been postponed. This means there will be no closure of State Highway 2 Chapel Street.
The planned works are deferred by a week and are scheduled to begin next weekend (6 June to 19 June. Friday 8 pm to Monday 6 am).

If you are a regular visitor to Masterton or just planning on heading through the Wairarapa town, be aware major rehabilitation works are about to get underway on State Highway 2, Chapel Street, next week.
This is a continuation of work started in January this year. Contractors will be working on Chapel Street south of Lincoln Road to the south of Cole Street.
They’ll be doing a full reconstruction of the road, involving major excavation and foundation work ahead of laying structural asphalt. The project will strengthen the road and make it less prone to potholes and traffic damage.
The work will see two full weekend closures - one from 9 June and the other from 16 June. They will run from 8 pm on Friday to 6 am Monday.
The work has been timed for weekends to minimise disruption. Full closures let contractors get the job done much more quickly, efficiently, and safely. Doing the work during the day under stop/go traffic management would take far longer and cause more inconvenience for drivers, businesses, and residents.
Waka Kotahi appreciates this work will be inconvenient for residents and business owners. However, these works will create an improved stretch of road that will require less repair and maintenance. We want to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while this work is done.
Similar works are also planned for another southern section of Chapel St. The exact timing for this is still to be set.
