The NZ Transport Agency has re-opened State Highway 2 Rimutaka Hill Road, but is reminding motorists to continue to take extra care as cold weather is contributing to challenging driving conditions.
A strong wind warning is still in place, and the MetService is forecasting further snow falls up until midnight tonight.
“We will be keeping an eye on the weather and road conditions, and if necessary, may need to close the road again later today,” Mark Owen, Regional Performance Manager, NZ Transport Agency says. “We advise that people make sure to check the road conditions before they travel. We’ll keep our website and social media channels updated, and electronic signs on both sides of the Rimutaka Hill Road will let motorists know of the current road status.”
“We are reminding motorists to drive to the conditions, reduce their speed and increase their following distances between vehicles,” Mr Owen says.
