The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that Rimutaka Hill Road (SH2) will be closed until further notice due to a slip. An update will be provided at approximately 6pm.
Transport Agency regional performance manager Mark Owen says continued rain has meant that the slip is still coming down.
"Our contractors have been working hard all day to clear the slip and get the road open. However the contractor was in the final stage of clearing the current slip when it moved again and rocks and debris came down covering the road.
"If the weather does not improve, the road could unfortunately be closed overnight."
"We appreciate how frustrating this is for people, but safety is paramount and we must keep the road closed until we are satisfied that the road is as safe as possible to travel on."
Traffic in both directions is affected by this road closure.
Motorists are advised to take the alternate route via SH1, SH57 and SH3. For northbound motorists this will take you via SH1 to Ohau, right onto SH57 to Ashhurst then right onto SH3 to Woodville. Reverse these instructions if travelling south. Or you could use the Pahiatua Track at Aokautere, which comes off SH57 and brings you onto SH2. The detour is likely to take more than three hours.
Motorists are advised to take the Wairarapa train, if possible.
If you have to drive home then ensure you have adequate fuel, food and water and avoid driving tired.
Another update is expected at 6pm.
"We thank motorists for their patience while we continue to work to get this road open and get them home safely tonight," says Mr Owen.
