The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that it will reopen the SH2 Rimutaka Hill Road, but is urging extreme caution.
NZTA Wellington Operations Manager Mark Owen says the NZTA will reopen the Rimutaka Hill Road at approximately 3pm, but driving conditions remain challenging and motorists must exercise extreme care.
“We’ve been able to open the Rimutaka Hill Road earlier than initially expected thanks to easing weather conditions and a huge effort by our contractors.”
“However, driving conditions remain difficult and we ask that motorists put safety first, avoid non-essential travel, and drive strictly to the conditions at all time. In particular we warn motorists to watch out for ice, as water is likely to freeze on the road, making the road surface icy and slippery”
Mr Owen said the NZTA’s contractors, Fulton Hogan, deserved a big pat on the back for their magnificent efforts clearing the road over the last few days.
“This has been an extraordinary weather event, and the team have done a superb job getting this road open and as safe as possible.”
Mr Owen advised that the road could be closed again if conditions deteriorate.
