The New Zealand Transport agency is advising motorists that the closure of right-hand turns at the intersection of SH2 and Moonshine Rd will come into effect on Monday, 4 August at 10.00am.

Due to weather delays, work at the intersection of SH2 and Whakatiki Street was not at the stage required to close the right-hand turn.  New Zealand Transport Agency Wellington Regional Manager Graham Taylor says deferring the right-hand closure at Moonshine Rd was always a possibility because of the poor weather everyone has been experiencing recently.

"We had indicated earlier in the week that sealing work had to be done at Whakatiki Street before we could close the right-hand turn at Moonshine Road.  This work is completely dependent on good weather and as a result we haven’t made the changes we expected.  After discussions with our contractor on site, we have made the joint decision to close the right-hand turn from Monday morning."

Mr Taylor says the change is part of the upgrade of the three intersections on SH2 / River Road – Moonshine Hill Road, Whakatiki Street and Moonshine Road.  Safety is expected to be much improved at Moonshine Road once the right-hand turn is closed, as will safety at the other two remaining intersections when work at all three sites is completed.

He says the New Zealand Transport Agency thanks Wellingtonians for their continued patience while this work has been carried out as we appreciate roadworks can be frustrating.

"People understand the end result will be worth any short-term inconvenience.  The improved safety on this section of the highway is what’s important."
