Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will be starting work on Monday 18 November to repair part of State Highway 35 at Pouawa, north of Gisborne.
A one kilometre section of the road, near the freedom camping area, will be dug out and resurfaced. This work is expected to be completed by Wednesday 27 November, depending on weather.
Regional Transport Systems Manager Oliver Postings says it is important that the road is repaired ahead of the busy summer holiday period.
“The Gisborne region becomes packed with tourists and holidaymakers over the summer and this work will help ensure that people travelling on State Highway 35 have a safer journey.
“This section of road is in a challenging environment and is vulnerable to coastal erosion. There is a large dropout next to the road within the section that we are resurfacing, which we also plan to fix as soon as we receive the necessary resource consents.
“Within the one kilometre section of road that we are resurfacing, a 50 metre section of road next to the dropout will remain untouched until after the dropout is repaired and coastal protection work is complete. This is partly to ensure that heavy vehicles needed for resurfacing work don’t cause further movement at the dropout site.
“In the meantime, we will be working hard to resurface the other parts of the road and appreciate everyone’s patience while this work is underway.”
During the resurfacing work, one lane will be closed and stop/go traffic management will be in place, with a temporary speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour. Road users should expect delays of up to 10 minutes and are advised to plan ahead as there is no diversion available.
