State Highway 1 users north of Hamilton are advised of night-time closures beginning this Sunday on the Te Rapa section of the Waikato Expressway.
The NZ Transport Agency’s Portfolio Manager Darry Coalter says this work is the continuation of the safety and weather proofing work from late last month.
“Works on the Te Rapa section have been progressing well with the first piece of work, which was preparing the road surface for the waterproofing layer, now substantially completed.
“The next step will involve filling in the rutting and adding sensors underneath the road which will allow us to monitor the moisture levels over the coming year.
“The information these sensors give us will help determine the long-term solution for the road surface,” says Mr Coalter.
The partial night time closure for these works on the Te Rapa section will start this Sunday 17 March.
Traffic will be detoured on the old SH1 route past the dairy factory and The Base. It will be clearly signposted and will add only a few minutes extra to travel time.
“It is our top priority to keep the state highway safe for road users and we are committed to fixing the road with a long-term solution as soon as we can.”
Resealing work is expected to start 18 March on the Ngaruawahia section of the expressway with more extensive work expected to start at the end of this month.
“We’d like to thank residents and road users for their understanding and patience while we complete these works on the highway,” says Mr Coalter.
The work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if required.
