Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding motorists that State Highway 2 over the Remutaka Hill will be closed for essential maintenance work for one night on Sunday 13 September, from 9pm until 4am Monday 14 September.
This closure is important to enable road crews to safely undertake essential maintenance and slip prevention works.
“The Remutaka Hill road is steep, narrow and winding which makes it a challenging environment to work in. Having the road fully closed to traffic is critical to ensuring the safety of our road crews,” Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says.
“It’s also better to do this work at night when there’s less traffic, so we can minimise disruption to people travelling across the hill.”
In the past 12 months, crews have been able to complete many months’ worth of work in a small number of night closures which has reduced stop/go disruptions at other times by 95 per cent.
Access will be available for emergency services throughout the closure.
Planning for the 2020/21 series of night closures is underway and Waka Kotahi will update the community when these have been confirmed.
