Improved journey time reliability to and from the airport is about to take off with the NZ Transport Agency’s use of high-tech ‘blip trackers’ to measure travel times during construction of the SH20A to Airport project.
Bluetooth technology is now measuring and reporting current travel times along main routes heading to and from Auckland Airport, including via the SH20 Manukau Harbour Bridge, the SH20 and Dominion Road interchange and SH20B.
Travel times are updated every six minutes and available at www.drivelive.nz/AKL(external link) – a mobile friendly webpage.
“Construction of the new motorway interchange at Kirkbride Road will have an impact our customers over the next 18 months,” says the NZ Transport Agency’s Highways Manager, Brett Gliddon.
“Installing Bluetooth technology on key routes in the area, that will be affected by roadworks, will provide better journey time reliability, helping people to plan when to leave and what time they will arrive at their destination.”
The first significant traffic changes associated with the SH20A to Airport project come into effect next week, with further changes being implemented in August.
Blip tracker technology was successfully used to help travellers heading to Fieldays at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek earlier this month and the NZ Transport Agency is pleased to be able to extend the initiative to the SH20A to Airport project.
Anonymous Bluetooth devices including mobile phones, headsets and in-car navigation systems register as they pass between tracking units at different points, tracking the travel time between different locations.
Units do not gather or record personal information and cannot be linked to an individual.
Road users are encouraged to visit www.drivelive.nz/AKL(external link), save the link to the ‘home screen’ of their mobile device, and then simply check the site prior to travel.
Road users are advised to contact the project freephone on 0508 6982 742, or website www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/sh20a-to-airport(external link) for further information.
