Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is holding an open day this Saturday to give the public a preview of the Whirokino Trestle and Manawatū River Bridge replacements before they officially open to traffic early in the new year.
The Whirokino Trestle and Manawatū River Bridge, between Foxton and Levin, are reaching the end of their lives and do not meet current standards. The $70 million project to replace them will provide a more resilient, safer route for freight and travellers.
Transport Agency Director of Regional Relationships Emma Speight is encouraging locals to come along to the open day to see and hear more about the project from the team involved.
“This section of State Highway 1 is a vital link for the lower North Island and improving its resilience has been a key priority for the Transport Agency.
“The replacement structures, on the western (coastal) side of the existing bridges, will include wider lanes and safer road edges.
“The existing Ken Everett Cycleway will remain in place and is being refreshed as part of the project, to ensure a safe route for cyclists. However, the replacement structures will include a 1.5-metre-wide shoulder that cyclists can also use.”
Members of the public can attend the open day from 9.45am on Saturday 14 December.
