Public information day for Tauranga Central Corridor

The NZTA is undertaking a project to improve the Tauranga Central Corridor from the Maungatapu/Welcome Bay Roundabouts to Cameron Road, and is holding a project open day on Thursday 25 September.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is undertaking a project to improve the Tauranga Central Corridor from the Maungatapu/Welcome Bay Roundabouts to Cameron Road, and is inviting anyone with an interest in the project to find out more what is proposed and provide the project team with their feedback at an open day being held later this week.

NZTA project manager Kevin Reid says that physical works are only a minor element of the Tauranga Central Corridor project, and the main aim is to find the most efficient way to manage the variety of road users and their needs in the safest and most effective way.

“We believe that consultation with key stakeholders and road users is crucial. Those people who use the central corridor will have valuable insight into the issues and requirements for the project,” he said.

Two special groups have been set up to assist with this process; the Steering Group- which includes a number of people and organisations with technical expertise who will control the strategic direction of the project and a Community Reference Group incorporating a broad range of interest groups such as community groups, educational institutions, iwi/hapu and road users.

"The strategies and ideas developed by the Steering Group will be put forward to the Community Reference Group to be considered before any decisions are made," Mr Reid said.

"As part of the consultation process, a number of Travel Demand Management strategies will be proposed. The consultation process will involve the application of each strategy to the local context and evaluating its effectiveness, which will ultimately lead to a successful final outcome for the Central Corridor," he said.

"If you would like to find out more about what the Steering Group is proposing and options for the corridor, and provide your feedback, the project team would like to hear from you at the Open Day." Mr Reid said.

The open day is being held on Thursday 25 September 2008 at Wesley Church, 100 13th Avenue, Tauranga from 5pm to 8pm.
