Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is asking locals for their feedback on the best places to add safe and effective passing opportunities on State Highways 2 and 35 in and out of Tairāwhiti.
As part of the Tairāwhiti roading package, funded by the Provincial Growth Fund PGF and the National Land Transport Fund, the Transport Agency is investigating where to add more passing opportunities between Napier and Ōpōtiki, and Gisborne and Hick’s Bay.
“We want locals and regular drivers of these roads to help us develop a preferred package of new passing opportunities for the Tairāwhiti region,” Transport Agency Director of Regional Relationships Emma Speight says.
“They’ll know whether the sites we’ve identified as potential new passing opportunities would work well in reality, and if there are any other locations we should be considering.”
The project has been included in the package because the highways in and out of Tairāwhiti are long and winding, and travel through some unforgiving terrain.
“Locals have told us that more passing opportunities would help improve their experience of sharing the road, leading to reduced driver frustration and improved safety,” Ms Speight says.
