Tairāwhiti Roads is advising motorists to expect delays on State Highway 35 Awapuni Road between Stanley Road and Grey Street from 14 February to 4 March.
This Thursday, work crews will begin making minor improvements in preparation for the full Awapuni Road upgrade.
Tairāwhiti Roads General Manager Dave Hadfield says the works include kerb and channel repairs, storm water pipe works, maintenance work at damaged property entrances to prevent water getting under the road, and investigation works to identify underground services.
“We’re doing our best to keep disruption to a minimum while this work is underway,” Mr Hadfield says.
“We’ve been visiting businesses to discuss how best to work around their needs, and we’ll be able to keep both traffic lanes open for the majority of the time.”
Motorists can expect stop/go traffic management for short periods of time throughout the project.
The $2.5 million upgrade is fully funded by the National Land Transport Programme, and is aimed at helping reduce the noise and vibration from increasing traffic levels.
Last year, fire hydrant lids were relocated outside of the driving lane to reduce the noise created from tyres making impact with hydrant lids. In March, the current chip seal will be replaced with asphalt concrete.
Mr Hadfield adds that additional benefits will include reduced ponding of water on the road surface, and a wider median strip to allow more room for vehicles turning right.
