NZ Transport Agency is advising Wellington commuters to plan ahead for their journey home tonight and allow extra time for travel, particularly if they need to pick up children.
The wet weather is forecast to get worse around 4pm, with heavier rain expected from Kapiti to Porirua and the Hutt.
Regional Performance manager Mark Owen says, “With the rain expected to get heavier later this afternoon we’re urging the public to drive to the conditions, leave plenty of room for cyclists and motorcyclists and expect that your trip home tonight may take longer than usual.
“We are keeping a close eye on the roads and the weather forecasts. Our contractors have cleared all the drains at spots on our highways that are prone to flooding and we’re working closely with our transport partners to prepare for and mitigate the impact of the wet weather.
“Slippery roads are much more dangerous, as they can turn minor errors into major problems.
“Heavy rain and wind can also result in debris on the road, so keep your eyes peeled for any obstructions.”
He says contractors are monitoring the road network and will be acting quickly to address any hazards to motorists.
Winds are forecast to get stronger particularly on the Rimutaka Hill Road so high-sided vehicles, caravans, campervans and people travelling by bicycle or motorbike are advised to take care.
Heavier bursts are forecast from later this evening (around 9pm) and overnight so get up earlier if you have an early appointment to get to tomorrow morning and leave extra time for travel.
The Wellington Transport Operations Centre team will be working overnight 24/7 to monitor the roads and get people to their destinations safely.
