The NZ Transport Agency reminds people to plan their travel to the ‘Big Day Out’ music festival at Western Springs Stadium in Auckland this Friday (17 January).
Traffic will be heavy in the in the area on the day, and people are being advised to travel early and to consider using public transport as the best way to get to and from the festival being held at Western Springs for the first time.
“We know that people coming from all over Auckland and other regions may be unfamiliar with the area. We’re recommending that they make a plan - especially on how to get home,” says the Transport Agency’s National Journey Manager, Kathryn Musgrave. “This will ensure that everyone has a safe and great day out.”
One of the busiest sections of highway will be the St Lukes interchange on the Northwestern Motorway (State Highway 16). There could be delays for drivers heading west on the motorway at this Interchange at peak times during the day and the evening. The east or citybound ramps of the interchange, together with Great North Road alongside the stadium and some other local roads, will be closed from 8pm on the night.
Mrs Musgrave says drivers should follow sign posted detours.
Special event buses from the CBD will be running to Western Springs throughout the day. Return services from Western Springs depart from Great North Road. Special event buses will also depart from the CBD to all the Northern Busway Stations. Details for travelling to the event on public transport are available here(external link).
The ‘Big Day Out’ festival is being held at Western Springs Stadium after 20 years at Mt Smart Stadium in Penrose. It runs from 11am until 11pm.
